SAFIN has gone through initial user trials and every effort is made to reduce false positives and false negatives.
Newborn babies breathe faster than older children and adults. A newborn may breathe more slowly when they sleep, but their respiratory rate should always fall within a healthy range.
Very fast or slow breathing may signal an infection or another condition and need to be consulted with your pediatrician.
SAFIN uses proprietary algorithms to measure a baby’s breathing rate.
Underarm (axillary) and forehead temperatures are considered to be less accurate
because they’re taken outside of the body rather than inside. These temperatures
can be as much as a full degree lower than oral body temperature.
But just because underarm temperature isn’t very precise doesn’t mean that it isn’t
useful. It can be a good way to screen for changes in body temperature.
Age range(years) | Normal temperature range for underarm temperature - SAFIN | Temperature considered fever |
---|---|---|
0–2 | 94.5–99°F (34.7–37.2°C) | 99.1°F+ (37.3°C+) |
3–10 | 96.6–98.0°F (35.9–36.7°C) | 98.1°F+ (36.7°C+) |
11–65 | 95.3–98.4°F (35.2–36.9°C) | 98.5°F+ (36.9°C+) |
65+ | 96.0–97.4°F (35.6–36.3°C) | 97.5°F+ (36.4°C+) |
Measuring method | Fever |
---|---|
Ear | 100.4°F+ (38°C+) |
Forehead | 100.4°F+ (38°C+) |
Mouth | 100°F+ (38.8°C+) |
Rectum | 100.4°F+ (38°C+) |
Underarm (SAFIN) | 99°F+ (37.2°C+) |
When taking axillary temperature, it can be useful to compare it to ear, oral, and rectal temperature readings, which are more precise. Use the following chart to find the ear, oral, or rectal reading that corresponds to the axillary reading.
Axillary temperature | Oral temperature | Rectal & ear temperature |
---|---|---|
98.4–99.3°F (36.9–37.4°C) | 99.5–99.9°F (37.5–37.7°C) | 100.4–101°F (38–38.3°C) |
99.4–101.1°F (37.4–38.4°C) | 100–101.5°F (37.8–38.6°C) | 101.1–102.4°F (38.4–39.1°C) |
101.2–102°F (38.4–38.9°C) | 101.6–102.4°F (38.7–39.1°C) | 102.5–103.5°F (39.2–39.7°C) |
102.1–103.1°F (38.9–39.5°C) | 102.5–103.5°F (39.2–39.7°C) | 103.6–104.6°F (39.8–40.3°C) |
103.2–104°F (39.6–40°C) | 103.6–104.6°F (39.8–40.3°C) | 104.7–105.6°F (40.4–40.9°C) |
There are plenty of products in the market that can read a baby’s temperature but SAFIN has the advantage of continuous real time temperature monitoring that can offer significant benefits to parents and caregivers.
SAFIN stores the data in the cloud through the SAFIN app which makes it easy to share with your pediatrician.
According to data from CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/safesleep/index.html), there are more than 3500+ sleep related deaths among US babies each year. 22% of mothers reported not placing their baby on his or her back to sleep, as recommended.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a safe sleep environment that can reduce the risk of all sleep-related infant deaths. Recommendations for a safe sleep environment include placing the baby on back to sleep, the use of a firm sleep surface, room-sharing without bed-sharing, and the avoidance of soft bedding and overheating.
SAFIN uses sensors to detect when your baby has turned from the recommended back sleeping position. Alerts are then sent to the phone so appropriate action to place the baby on the back to avoid accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.
